Nigeria's gambling map was redrawn in November 2024, and a lot of casino sites still describe the old one.
What Changed
The Supreme Court held that the federal National Lottery Act 2005 does not apply inside the states — gaming is a residual matter, which under Nigeria's constitution means it belongs to state legislatures. The practical effect is that the federal regulator's writ no longer runs beyond the Federal Capital Territory, and licences it issued for operations in the states lost their force.
So the licence that matters for a Nigerian player is a state licence. For most online operators, that means Lagos.
The Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority
The LSLGA licenses operators for Lagos State and publishes a register of who holds what. Online sports betting and online casino are issued together as a single category, each licence running for one year with printed start and end dates — which is genuinely useful, because it means you can check not just whether a brand is licensed but whether its licence is current.
Note the shape of it: the licensed entity is almost never the brand. Each international operator runs through a separate Nigerian company, and the register lists both, so you need the company name to find the entry.
How To Check
Open the authority's published list of licensed operators and search for the trading name. If the brand isn't there, or its end date has passed, you're dealing with an operator that has no Nigerian permission — whatever its footer says about Curaçao or Anjouan.
